Tierra Del Sol Gallery presents Hollywood, Camera, Action! the first Studio Artist curated exhibition at the Chinatown location. Artist Evan Hynes selected works from six Studio artists to be in dialog with his own imagery that centers on Hollywood, movies and the characters that inspire him.

Evan Hynes, like Raymond Pettibon, Kenny Scharf, Takashi Murakami and Keith Haring, is inspired by pop culture imagery. Like these well-known artists, Hynes personalizes iconic characters with his own signature style, often using his studio friends as models.

Like Pettibon and Scharf, Hynes lives and works in LA and his work reflects various proximities to Hollywood. A global phenomenon and a site of cultural production, Hollywood is a robust market for visual narratives that influences people around the world and many in LA. Hynes channels this closeness, making use of its immediacy by adding his own text, hues and symbology to his neighborhood icons.

Hynes and Murakami use a wellspring of innovation to riff on popular symbols to create complex characters. Like Murakami and Haring, Hynes’ figures are playful and focus on form, creating a visual language that is unique and recognizable, similar to the Hollywood personas that comprise Lights, Camera, Action!

At Tierra Del Sol, the artist’s voice and narrative are primary in the gallery program. We recognize that the Studio Arts program is special because it nurtures these concepts, but also because it fosters comradery and deep friendships among artists, mentors and other staff. Hynes sees shared attributes in his selections of his friends’ works for the exhibition. Catherine Benita, Justin Braden, Jose Hernandez, Daniel Padilla, Jeffrey Rinksy and Zack Stewart.

By curating his friends into the exhibition, Hynes has made his original art practice even more so. Evan Hynes: Hollywood, Camera, Action! brings the vital relationships of the studios onto Chung King Road to demonstrate the aesthetic and social values of the Tierra Del Sol program. Each artist and their stories are unique to the Studios, yet they are bound by a passion for making that exceeds circumstance, creating a celebratory, joyful experience in the gallery.
