A Solo Exhibition of Works on Paper & Ceramics

July 8 – September 2, 2023

Sarit Halo, A Lady Laying On Her Pink Bed, 2021, mixed media on paper, 12 x 17“

Tierra del Sol Gallery is excited to present Sarit Halo: It’s a Colorful World. This is Halo’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.

Halo merges worlds of memory and imagination in colorful mixed media portraits, interiors and landscapes. Her work depicts her family and people in her life, including housemates and fellow artists in the Tierra del Sol Studio program. To create these playful yet serene works, Halo draws inspiration from source materials, searching for patterns and poses that she makes her own by adding elements from her dreams, faces from her community and distant villages from stories of her family’s life as Persian Jewish immigrants to the US.

Like the pattern-rich, studied works of Aliza Nisenbaum, Halo’s figurative lens verges on abstraction while focusing on her relationship to her subjects. She wants her art to remind the viewer of interactions and moments with their own family. While Halo’s parents have passed, her extended California family has expanded through her religious life and her twenty years at Tierra del Sol.

As the daughter of immigrants, Halo’s imagination and desire interface with familial memories and stories through a detailed geometry, much like the art and imagination of Hayv Kahraman whose figures are precise even as they float in ethereal compositions. For Halo, temporal investigations fuse the past and present via geographies visible through windows and California landscapes that harken to distant lands.

Pets and other animals feature prominently on the laps of Halo’s subjects or by themselves in nature. Halo plays with scale in these works and in her interiors, offering a whimsical perspective that invites the viewer to consider how meaningful interactions give shape to her creativity.

Sarit Halo: It’s a Colorful World also includes ceramic yoga ladies, an extension of the breadth of Halo’s art practice and her yoga routine honed during the pandemic. These three-dimensional pieces share a

playfulness and mastery of color and are in conversation with her wall works as scenes just off the paper, yet vitally important to her fully realized visual language.

It’s a Colorful World opens July 8 and runs through September 2, 2023. Join us in celebrating Halo’s extensive body of work in her first solo show on July 8, 6-8pm.
