Jackie Marsh
Exhibition January 9 – March 6, 2021
Tierra Del Sol Gallery presents the work of Jackie Marsh who has been with Tierra’s studio program for over 10 years. This is Marsh’s first solo exhibit at Tierra Del Sol Gallery in Chinatown.
Jackie Marsh has a passion for making art and objects, where her love of flowers and animals appears prominently in her two and three dimensional works. Like Warhol’s Flowers, Marsh’s vivid flower paintings are layers of bold colors that celebrate her relationship to nature and to humanity. Her colored pencil, pen and acrylic works feel like sacred geometry: mandalas in motion, demonstrating Marsh’s love of movement. These landscapes depict contained universes, yet she invites the viewer in by showing us her hand, connecting us to flowers, psychedelic colors and self-referential forms she creates.
Marsh relishes building community through her work. Her ceramic practice centers on bowls, cups and animal figures that are tactile, playful and full of the evidence of her joy in making. Reminiscent of Los Angeles ceramist Magdalena Suarez Frimkess, Marsh’s three dimensional works tell stories in their shape and the imagery Marsh paints and carves into them. Her ceramic works are both art forms and utilitarian pieces, and Marsh enjoys learning about what collectors do with her objects. Together, as a large scale installation, they create a powerful interpretation of her two dimensional ideas, entire cosmologies to dive into and explore.
During this difficult time of social unease and distress, Jackie Marsh offers us succor with her inviting color fields and generous imagery. When she isn’t creating art, she is tending to her menagerie of animals, reminding us to look after each other. Marsh also shows us how valuable bold color and purposeful objects can be in shaping the immersive experiences we build for ourselves and others, something the artists, mentors and staff at Tierra Del Sol are deeply committed to.
Join us in celebrating Jackie Marsh and her work. The exhibition opens January 9, 2021 by appointments available on our website, www.tierradelsolgallery.org.
