Eric Lue, God of War, 2023, graphite, pastel, & marker on paper, 12 x 18″

Tierra del Sol Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Eric Lue. This marks Lue’s first solo presentation as well as the inaugural exhibition in the Tierra del Sol Annex Gallery. The Annex Gallery is a 16 x 16-foot space at the front of Tierra del Sol Gallery in West Hollywood; it is used for small-scale presentations by emerging artists as well as multimedia installations in larger exhibitions.

Lue has worked as an artist in Tierra del Sol’s studios for nearly 20 years. His practice runs the gamut, from raw, energetic drawings in colored pencil and pastel to large scale mixed-media sculptures of found objects adhered together by a thick coating of acrylic paint. Lue’s debut solo exhibition features a range of graphic, colorful works on paper depicting monsters suspended in action, emperors operating war machines,

and richly textured landscapes of desolated battlefields. These scenes center around the commanding nucleus of the exhibition, a massive mixed-media sculpture titled “Destruction City.” Comprised of found objects, fabric scraps, and recycled materials affixed to four panels of corrugated cardboard, “Destruction City” epitomizes Lue’s assemblage practice and lives up to its name. Wrought with disorder and calamity, the sculpture materializes as a decaying society from which the characters in Lue’s works on paper have emerged. As a whole, his practice can be interpreted as an exploration of everything from traditional modes of masculinity to an unflinching portrayal of conquest and war. Lue’s works do not explicitly condone or condemn violence, instead reveling in the physicality of combat and the freedom of true anarchy. Through brash mark making and saturated fields of bold colors, Lue’s works confront viewers with an innate, primal desire to fight for whatever cause compels you. To be immersed in Lue’s world is to be immersed in chaos.

Eric Lue was born in Los Angeles in 1985. His work has been in group shows at Tierra del Sol Gallery in West Hollywood, CA; South Bay Contemporary Gallery in San Pedro, CA; and the Inland Empire Museum of Art in Upland, CA. He was included in “Space is the Place,” a group exhibition curated by Alison Saar. Eric Lue’s solo exhibition will open in the Annex Gallery at Tierra del Sol on March 15th with a reception from

6-8 pm. The exhibition will be on view through May 3rd, 2025; it will run concurrently with Evan Hyne’s solo exhibition, “Rebel’s Kingdom,” in the main gallery.
