“Catalina” – Documentary Short Film
Tierra del Sol presents “Catalina,” a documentary short film about Catalina Ortega, whose practice is playfully entangled with the popular art of cosplay. “Catalina” premiered in May 2024 alongside Ortega’s debut solo exhibition of the same name. Produced by creative multi-hyphenate Darren Romanelli, Catalina celebrates the popular costuming subculture and explores its significance from the perspective of a dedicated cosplayer. The film features interviews with the artist, a comprehensive overview of her fine art practice, and cosplay performance footage shot by Ortega herself.

Disability, Acceptance + Art | Documentary Short Film by BirdMine Stories
Created by Allison Norlian of BirdMine Stories, “Disability, Acceptance + Art” is a documentary short film exploring the studio arts program at the Tierra del Sol Foundation. The documentary focuses on artists Kyle Johnson, Chelsea Lenninger, Zack Stewart, and Lexington Sherbin, featuring interviews with each of them as well as footage from the opening reception of 10 x 10: 100 Artists of Tierra del Sol, the 2022 edition of our annual open call exhibition.
Gallery Walkthrough with Marlena Arthur
Marlena Arthur’s first solo exhibition runs from September 11 through October 30, 2021. This short video walks you through the show. Marlena has been part of Tierra’s studio arts program for five years but she already knew how to draw when she joined us. This show, The Rainbow Girls, is an introduction to seven female superheroes that Marlena created with her vision of a community of powerful young ladies who join together to save the world.
Gallery Walkthrough with Architecting California:
Tierra Del Sol Gallery presents Architecting California, a unique group exhibition highlighting five artists from five California nonprofit art studio programs. In this short video we explore the works of the five artists included in this show; Sylvia Fragoso, Dan Hamilton, Maria Kim, Michael LeVell, and Evelyn Reyes. The artists in this show have used their imagination to uniquely investigate and express the idea of architecture in their own ways. Enjoy!
Keep on Trucking with Douglas Allen:
Douglas Allen’s solo show Keep on Trucking at Tierra del Sol Gallery runs from May 12th to July 3rd, 2021. Keep on Trucking highlights Allen’s bold colored pen and pencil drawings, inspired by his long-held desire to be a truck driver. Artist Corner with Hugo Rocha:
Hugo Rocha is the subject in our eighth edition of Artist Corner. Hugo’s work reinvents specific scenes he carefully selects from popular telenovela soap opera shows. Rocha’s narratively rich images employ his explosive use of color, expressive reinvention of the figure and intricately balanced compositional shapes which play with the viewer’s sense of depth. We document his process in the studio in this two-minute video.

John Boyer’s solo show at Tierra del Sol Gallery runs from March 13 to May 8th, 2021. John Boyer (1931 – 2005) was a prolific maker in a style similar to what has traditionally been labeled outsider artist. In this short video, you will see John’s deep interest in architecture and historical figures through his treasure trove of two-dimensional drawings.

Katie Mendoza is the subject in our sixth edition of Artist Corner. Katie works in a variety of mediums that include zines, drawings, paintings, and dolls.
